Lucy Downey

Pelvic Health and Musculoskeletal

My story:

Growing up in Bondi and going to school in Waverley allowed me to spend a lot of my younger years outdoors and by the ocean. I had an active childhood playing a number of different sports (netball being the favourite!). My strong interest in health and the human body lead me to study Health Science and then Physiotherapy at Sydney Uni. After my studies, I spent 2.5 years living and working in London, but it didn’t take long for me to miss the sun and the ocean, and I made the move back to Sydney.

It was through teaching Pilates that sparked my interest in women’s health. I found that so many women had questions about their bodies and I wanted to help them find answers - so I started taking up some courses in women’s pelvic health. My fascination in the human body has only grown over time and came to a peak after the birth of my daughter. Experiencing for myself the challenges and triumphs of pregnancy, birth and the post partum period has allowed me to have a deeper understanding of my patients who are navigating this transformative period.

It has been my learnings both personally and professionally that motivate me to continue to maintain an active lifestyle and to pass this knowledge on to my patients and empower them to be at their best.

When not at work you’ll find me at the beach with my family and dog (Zeus), finding the next lunch/dinner or coffee spot, or planning our next trip away.

What makes me different:

Over the years I have been lucky to work in many fields in both the public and private sectors, across the UK and in Sydney. I have worked in orthopaedics, rehabilitation, neurological, cardiorespiratory, sports and musculoskeletal settings before turning to women’s health. It is this vast range of experience that pushes me to think holistically in the way I help my patients. I am passionate about my job and I enjoy problem solving to achieve the best results, as well constantly learning from my peers, colleagues and other professionals in our field.

My goal is to guide my patients to achieve their personal goals - whatever they may be! I love to incorporate principles of pilates in the rehab programs I set, so that my patients adopt optimal movement patterns and remain pain free long-term.
